1° Apocalypse Now – “La follia”
Il capolavoro. Uscito nel 1979 e in seguito affiancato da una seconda versione (con scene inedite e un differente audio) con il nome “ Apocalypse Now Redux” (2001), stabilmente occupa le prime posizioni nelle classifiche delle migliori pellicole di sempre. Oltre che un mirabile film di guerra è anche un allucinato viaggio nel tortuoso fiume della psiche umana. Diretto magistralmente da Francis Ford Coppola, è ispirato al romanzo di Joseph Conrad “Cuore di tenebra”. La sua migliore arma è la forza delle immagini, da rimanere a bocca aperta.

Colonel Kurtz: I remember when I was with Special Forces. Seems a thousand centuries ago. We went into a camp to inoculate the children. We left the camp after we had inoculated the children for Polio, and this old man came running after us and he was crying. He couldn't see. We went back there and they had come and hacked off every inoculated arm. There they were in a pile. A pile of little arms. And I remember... I... I... I cried. I wept like some grandmother. I wanted to tear my teeth out. I didn't know what I wanted to do. And I want to remember it. I never want to forget it. I never want to forget. And then I realized... like I was shot... like I was shot with a diamond... a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought: My God... the genius of that. The genius. The will to do that. Perfect, genuine, complete, crystalline, pure. And then I realized they were stronger than we. Because they could stand that these were not monsters. These were men... trained cadres. These men who fought with their hearts, who had families, who had children, who were filled with love... but they had the strength... the strength... to do that. If I had ten divisions of those men our troubles here would be over very quickly. You have to have men who are moral... and at the same time who are able to utilize their primordial instincts to kill without feeling... without passion... without judgment... without judgment. Because it's judgment that defeats us.
2° Full Metal Jacket – “L’addestramento”
E’ un film del maestro Stanley Kubrick, già ciò è sinonimo d’eccellenza nell’ambito tecnico, ma con gli anni è anche diventato a livello tematico un mito per numerosi giovani di tutto il mondo. Scaglia un durissimo colpo all’esercito e alla guerra. Sceneggiato dal romanzo di Gustav Hasford “The Short Timers”. Anno 1987.
Sergeant Hartman to the graduating recruits : Today, you people are no longer maggots. Today, you are Marines. You're part of a brotherhood. From now on until the day you die, wherever you are, every Marine is your brother. Most of you will go to Vietnam. Some of you will not come back. But always remember this: Marines die. That's what were here for. But the Marine Corp lives forever. And that means YOU live forever.
3° La Sottile Linea Rossa ( The Thin Red Line ) - "L’affresco corale"
E’ il miglior film degli ultimi dieci anni. Forse nella pellicola la guerra è solo un incipit o meglio il pretesto che porta il regista e sceneggiatore americano Terrence Malick a porre numerose domande sulla natura umana e il suo ruolo nel mondo. La vicenda dei soldati è ispirata al romanzo omonimo di James Jones.
Capt. James ‘Bugger’ Staros: I've lived with these men, sir, for two and a half years and I will not order them all to their deaths."
4° Orizzonti Di Gloria ( Paths of Glory) - "La scacchiera del comando”
Paths of Glory può, non a sproposito, simboleggiare quello che sciaguratamente, ma necessariamente è diventato un vero movimento cinematografico, mi riferisco al cinema antimilitarista. Oltre che alle indissolubili atrocità legate alla guerra, analizza in maniera efficace i contrasti ideologici in due distinte classi di comando nell’esercito. Col semplice ma splendido finale è il più commovente della classifica. Diretto nel 1957 da Stanley Kubrick e tratto dal romanzo omonimo di Humphrey Cobb.
General Broulard: Colonel Dax! You will apologize at once or I shall have you placed under arrest!
Colonel Dax: I apologize... for not being entirely honest with you. I apologize for not revealing my true feelings. I apologize, sir, for not telling you sooner that you're a degenerate, sadistic old man. And you can go to hell before I apologize to you now or ever again!
5° Il Grande Uno Rosso ( The Big Red One)- "La sopravvivenza”
Fuller lo ha detto spesso: la vera gloria della guerra è sopravvivere. E’ un film del 1980 scritto, quasi come un’autobiografia, e diretto dallo specialista nel genere Samuel Fuller, decorato reduce della seconda guerra mondiale. Non a caso il film può ritenersi un’antologia di guerra ma anche di cinema.
Griff: I can't murder anybody.
The Sergeant: We don't murder; we kill.
Griff: It's the same thing.
The Sergeant: The hell it is, Griff. You don't murder animals; you kill 'em.
6° Il Ponte Sul Fiume Kwai ( The Bridge on the River Kwai )- "La prigionia"
Un colosso. Con 7 Oscar è Il più premiato film di guerra della storia dall’Academy, generalmente restìa verso altri meritevoli film. Tiene alta la bandiera della dignità dell’uomo. Tratto dal romanzo di Pierre Boulle e diretto da David Lean. Anno 1957
Colonel Nicholson: One day the war will be over. And I hope that the people that use this bridge in years to come will remember how it was built and who built it. Not a gang of slaves, but soldiers, British soldiers, Clipton, even in captivity.
7° La Grande Guerra - "Gli anti-eroi"
L’unico film nostrano della classifica visto che nel genere difficilmente l’Italia è riuscita a competere (per i mezzi finanziari principalmente?) col cinema internazionale, americano in primis. In bilico tra dramma e commedia, narra, in maniera tutta italiana, lo stesso orrore delle altre pellicole, ma naturalmente è il più vicino, in molti sensi, a noi. Ispirato al racconto ‘Due Amici’ di Guy de Maupassant e diretto da Mario Monicelli nel 1959.
Vittorio Gassman ai suoi commilitoni: Com’è che dice il proverbio, eh? Se non capisci niente, o fai l’avvocato o fai il sergente.
8° Flags of Our Fathers - "I simboli"
Lettere da Iwo Jima ( Letters from Iwo Jima ) - "Lettere dal fronte”
Un ex equo obbligato. Due facce di una stessa medaglia, viene da dire e in un senso lo sono.
E’ la prima volta che un regista decide di raccontare, in due pellicole differenti, una ‘guerra’ e una ‘battaglia’ dalle opposte fazioni. Evidenzio questa dicitura in quanto è in ciò che maggiormente si differenziano i due lavori. Flags, imperniato sull’ottica degli americani, è più elaborato sulla guerra in senso ampio, sulle sue mosse sociali-politiche (se così si possono definire) e sulle sue forze “trainanti”. Nel versante nipponico di Letters invece, si focalizza l’obiettivo sul confronto a livello intimo con la battaglia, sugli aspetti meramente umani. Sceneggiati rispettivamente dal libro omonimo di James Bradley e da lettere di soldati giapponesi alcune raccolte nel libro di Tadamichi Kuribayashi, Picture Letters from Commander in Chief. James Bradley: I finally came to the conclusion that he maybe he was right. Maybe there's no such thing as heroes. Maybe there are just people like my dad. I finally came to understand why they were so uncomfortable being called heroes. Heroes are something we create, something we need. It's a way for us to understand what's almost incomprehensible, how people could sacrifice so much for us, but for my dad and these men, the risks they took, the wounds they suffered, they did that for their buddies. They may have fought for their country but they died for their friends. For the man in front, for the man beside him, and if we wish to truly honor these men we should remember them the way they really were, the way my dad remembered them.

9° L'urlo della Battaglia ( Merrill’s Marauders ) - "L’eroismo bellico"
Una brigata di soldati volontari affronta una lunghissima e insidiosa marcia nella giungla per portare a termine la loro fondamentale missione. Questo film a tratti grandioso è stato scritto e diretto da Samuel Fuller nel 1948.
10° Obiettivo Burma ( Objective Burma!) - "Il manuale di guerra"
Non esiste, forse, un film così dettagliato e completo sulle metodiche in guerra.Viaggia su alti ritmi concentrato sul raggiungimento dell’obiettivo, il resto non è argomento del film. Raul Walsh è il regista di questa pellicola del 1945 , certamente tra le sue più riuscite.
