Il Jazz: Oscar Peterson

Se da un pò di tempo mi sto fortemente appassionando a questo genere musicale molto lo si deve ad un gigante del nostro tempo:
Oscar Emmanuel Peterson
(Montreal 15-08-1925 / Toronto 23-12-2007)

Figlio di un portantino delle ferrovie (la Canadian Pacific Railway), all’età di cinque anni aveva intrapreso lo studio della tromba (presto abbandonata per una tubercolosi) per poi avvicinarsi al pianoforte classico, i cui primi rudimenti furono impartiti dalla sorella maggiore Daisy e che in seguito lo portarono nel 1939 a vincere il suo primo concorso per dilettanti. Ma fu la passione per il jazz ad avere la meglio conducendo il giovane Oscar ad intraprendere una carriera tra le più brillanti nella storia della musica afroamericana.
E' sicuramente stato uno dei maggiori virtuosi del pianoforte ed ha cavalcato le scene mondiali dal lontano 1949, portato alla ribalta con la una celebre esibizione a Carnegie Hall, a New York.
Straordinario nelle composizioni e negli arrangiamenti è stato probabilmente uno tra i pianisti jazz più prolifici della storia della musica. La sua personale e sbalorditiva tecnica pianistica, al servizio di un potente swing, lo rendono stilisticamente immediatamente riconoscibile all'interno di qualsiasi contesto. Influenzato da pianisti storici come Art Tatum, Teddy Williams, James P. Johnson e Nat “King” Cole, Peterson svilupperà sin da giovane un inimitabile talento tecnico rappresentato dal velocissimo e inarrivabile fraseggio; approccio pianistico indiscusso che per modalità espressiva si unì ad un insuperabile voicing narrativo. Dotato di multiformi e complesse invenzioni estetiche, il pianista canadese fu subito notato dall’impresario Norman Granz che lo coinvolse in uno dei celebri concerti itineranti di “Jazz At The Philarmonic”.
Di derivazione blues, il suo stile è stato paragonato a quello del suo predecessore e maestro Art Tatum. La sua sterminata discografia lo vede al fianco dei più grandi monumenti della storia del jazz. Il suo periodo d'oro fu nel decennio tra il 1950 e il 1960, quando suonò accanto a grandi nomi della storia jazz come Ella Fitzgerald, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Dizzie Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Anita O'Day, Coleman Hawkins, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Benny Carter e molti altri.
Nel 1958 crea il famosissimo Oscar Peterson trio, costituito dallo stesso Peterson al piano, dal fenomenale Ray Brown al contrabbasso e da Ed Thigpen alla batteria. Musicista della scuderia Verve, dopo essere stato grande sideman per le stelle degli anni '50 si ricavò uno spazio fondamentale e di prim'ordine nella storia della musica jazz.
Il cattivo stato di salute - era stato colpito da un ictus che lo aveva lasciato semiparalizzato - negli ultimi tempi lo aveva costretto a cancellare più volte eventi sul palcoscenico, compreso un concerto previsto all'edizione 2007 del Toronto Jazz Festival.
Oscar Peterson si è spento a Mississagua, il 23 dicembre 2007, a causa di un' insufficienza renale.

Un'altro monumento della musica se ne è andato ma la sua musica, per nostra gioia e fortuna, lo terrà vivo in eterno.
